In Loving Memory of Atty. Joel U. Macalino, MD
August 1, 1963 – June 10, 2026

The Asian Collaboration for Trauma mourns the passing of our dear friend and esteemed colleague from the Philippines.

Prof. Macalino was a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of the Philippines Manila College of Medicine, a Fellow of the Philippine College of Surgeons (PCS) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS), and the rare distinction of also being a licensed lawyer (MD, LLB).

He served with great dedication as Chairman of the PCS Committee on Trauma and as Co-Director of the PCS Trauma Integrated Body’s Legislative Cluster — championing trauma systems, injury prevention, and medico-legal reform across the Philippines. He was a past president of the Philippine Society for the Surgery of Trauma. He was a familiar and respected face at the PCS Annual Clinical Congress.

To the ACT community, Prof Macalino was more than a colleague — he was a teacher, an advocate, and a bridge between trauma surgery and justice.

We send our deepest condolences to his family, students, and the entire Philippine surgical community.

Rest in peace, Prof. Your legacy endures.
